Most hotel websites have a Book Now button. Very few have a booking engine that genuinely converts. Here is the difference — and why your direct channel is probably losing 60% of the traffic it receives to an OTA.
The average Indian hotel website receives meaningful organic traffic. Guests who search "resort Rishikesh" on Google, guests referred from OTAs via the billboard effect, guests who've stayed before and type your name directly. This traffic is warm — it's already qualified and interested.
The tragedy is what happens next. Studies of hotel website conversion consistently show that 50–70% of visitors who reach a hotel's booking page abandon it before completing a reservation. They go back to MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, or Agoda — and the hotel pays commission to convert a guest who was already on their own website.
The problem is almost never the demand. It's the booking experience.
1. The page is slow on mobile. Over 70% of Indian hotel searches happen on mobile. If your booking engine takes more than 3 seconds to load on a 4G connection, you've lost half your potential conversions before anyone sees a rate.
2. UPI is not available. UPI processes over 60% of digital payments in India. A booking engine that doesn't offer UPI is asking Indian guests to use a payment method they consider secondary. Conversion drops immediately.
3. The rate is the same as — or worse than — the OTA. If a guest checks your website and finds the same rate they already have on MakeMyTrip, there is no reason to book direct. You need a visible best-rate guarantee: "Lowest price guaranteed — book direct." Without it, the OTA wins by default because guests trust the OTA interface more than an unfamiliar website.
4. The checkout has too many steps. International booking engines are designed for Western guests accustomed to entering card details. Indian guests on mobile need: select room → see price with GST → choose date → pay via UPI — done. Every extra step is a drop in conversion.
5. No GST invoice on confirmation. Corporate and business travellers need a GST-compliant invoice to claim input tax credit. If your booking confirmation doesn't include a proper tax invoice, you lose every B2B booking to an OTA that does provide one.
6. No trust signals. Reviews, security badges, cancellation policy, and response time indicators all increase conversion. A booking engine that looks generic or dated asks guests to trust an unfamiliar brand with their payment details — they'd rather use Booking.com's secure interface.
7. The available rate is not competitive because parity isn't being monitored. If an OTA is showing your room ₹200 cheaper (from an old promotional rate that wasn't updated), guests who compare will always choose the OTA. Rate parity monitoring is a conversion tool, not just a commercial compliance requirement.
NetShine's Direct Booking Engine is built around Indian conversion realities:
The goal is to make booking direct feel more trustworthy, faster, and more rewarding than booking through an OTA — because that's the only way to change the economics of Indian hotel distribution at scale.
When a guest searches "boutique hotel in Manali" on Google, a panel appears at the top of results showing room rates from multiple booking sources side by side. MakeMyTrip is there. Booking.com is there. If your direct rate is connected via Google Hotel Ads, your website rate appears there too — labelled "Official site."
This is free advertising for your direct channel to the most qualified audience in existence: guests who are actively searching for a hotel in your destination. The conversion rate from Google Hotel Ads clicks is among the highest of any digital channel.
Most Indian independent hotels are not connected to Google Hotel Ads. They're paying MakeMyTrip and Booking.com to appear in the same place they could appear directly, for free (or at a small cost-per-click that is a fraction of OTA commission).
Connecting your direct booking engine to Google Hotel Ads is not a complex technical exercise. It's a 2–4 hour setup. The revenue impact begins the same day.
